The Kyrgyz land abounds with its natural beauties. Shamsi gorge is one of the most picturesque, although harsh at first glance because of the many steep cliffs and mountain slopes. But it's worth looking at this gorge, and even a must-visit, because each gorge holds its own natural secrets. The turbulent Shamsi River flows along the gorge, and an incredible amount of mountain grasses, flowers, shrubs and conifers grows on the gentle slopes.
The gorge has a diverse landscape - at the entrance, the terrain seems monotonous - mountain slopes of inhospitable peaks, mixed grasses, and a river flowing below. But the further you go, the more lively the landscape becomes. Huge forests of coniferous trees, lands of the most diverse shrubs, wild plants, meadow grasses. There are fertile jailoos (summer pastures) of local residents - descendants of nomads. In spring, everything blooms with color, subtle floral scents hover, the whole nature is fragrant.
During the summer season, the gorge seems to wake up from a long winter hibernation, and people inhabit these fertile places. With the arrival of summer, the gorge will be filled with snow-white domes of Kyrgyz yurts, numerous yurt and tent camps and recreation areas will be established for everyone, and the aroma of appetizingly fried boorsoks (traditional bread) and smoke from boiling cauldrons will be felt in the air. In summer it is very lively, crowded and fun here.
Road to Shamsi in March
The gorge is popular among those who like difficult and long routes. The gorge is very picturesque and inviting with pristine forests, subalpine meadows, and a valley rich in various grasses. The gorge is rich not only in an abundance of grasses, shrubs and trees, but also a lot of wild animals. Wild boars, wolves, foxes live in high-altitude forests, lynx, martens, hares, ermines can be found. Hunting of wild animals has been banned in Shamsi for several years, and thanks to this, rare species of wild animals and birds have been preserved.
It must be remembered that each gorge has its own world and you need to take care of the laws of the forest world, namely, do not leave garbage, clean up after yourself and do not light fires. At an altitude of more than three thousand meters, there is the Shamsi pass, which connects two wide valleys - Kochkor and Chuy. Climbing up the upper reaches of the Tuyuk River, you can see the wonderful Tuyuk-Koltor lake - this is one of the main attractions of the gorge. The second is a delightful cascade of waterfalls located on the right tributary of the Shamsi - Chon Koltor River.
On the way to Shamsi
No gorge in Kyrgyzstan is complete without its own legends, tales and epics. Shamsi Gorge also has its own beautiful history. It tells us that the beautiful queen Shamsi lived in these parts, and was buried in this region. And the golden mask found in the gorge (that is situated now at the main History Museum in Bishkek) belonged to her.
The gorge is rich in medicinal herbs and many beekeepers are located here, which means that you can buy delicious and good honey and other bee products from the hands of the beekeeper himself. The gorge is also a favorite place not only for herbalists, but also for lovers of mushrooms and berries - strawberries grow here in large numbers, there are thickets of wild rose hips and barberry.
In 1968, the Shah of Iran visited these protected areas and a house was specially built for him, which was later called the "shah's house".
