Son Kul - a pristine high alpine lake in the heart of Kyrgyzstan
Son Kul lake from panorama point
This crystal-clear lake is located high in the mountains, hidden by the inner spurs of the Tien Shan mountain range, as if the mountains themselves hide it from prying eyes at an altitude of over 3,000 meters above sea level. The length of the lake is 29 km, and the width is 17 km, while the depth of the lake is more than 13 meters. It is a protected area of the Naryn region, surrounded by the pristine expanses of picturesque jailoo (summer pasture) and untouched nature, which has preserved its pristine beauty and originality of the region.
Many poetic and musical creations are dedicated to Song Kul, an indescribable land inspires the creation of masterpieces. It is a very unforgettable place, where all visiting travelers and locals themselves rush to. And they come here for peace of mind and natural harmony - the atmosphere will heal visitors from their worries. After all, looking at the mirrored surface of the lake, you can imagine how many centuries it reflects the unique patterns of passing.
A yurt camp situated at the shore of Son Kul lake. This is a place for an overnight stay in this area
For nature lovers, the lake is open only in summer, in other seasons it cannot be reached due to snow drifts, icy wind, cold weather, and the road is closed. And in summer, it can be very windy and you need to take warm clothes and everything you need to stay warm. In summer, Son Kul is hospitable, there are yurt camps where they will warm, water and where you can try true Kyrgyz cuisine.
The eastern part of the lake is part of the Karatal-Japyryk State Nature Reserve, home to more than fifty rare birds, more than a dozen species of fish (surprisingly, the lake was once fishless due to the icy cold, but different species of fish were artificially cultivated), and animals listed in the Red Book on the outskirts. The flora and fauna of Son Kul are unique in their diversity and in the composition of the most diverse plant species. Small streams and small rivers of glacial origin flow into the lake. The surroundings of Son Kul are a place where everyone can be in solitude with nature.

Contemplating the lake, you can suddenly experience a stop in the flow of thoughts, as the very environment of this extraordinary area, the atmosphere itself, acts as if it heals a person from fuss, internal imbalance, disharmony.
It takes about six hours to get there from Bishkek, or two and a half hours from Kochkor, one of the administrative centers of the Naryn region. You can visit this unique place only if you book a tour with local tour companies or through local tour guides, as there are no special buses, shuttle buses and taxis.
