This settlement was formed with the discovery of coal deposits back in the pre-revolutionary period. And with the construction of the Tash-Kumyr-Andijan railway, intensive coal mining began and a mine management department was opened.
With the construction of the coal basin, the small settlement began to grow actively and after a few years grew into a town.

Tash-Kumyr is unique in its geographical location - it is located on the right bank of the beautiful Naryn River, near the Osh-Bishkek highway, connected to the railway branch with the Uch-Kurgan station on the Andijan-Namangan line. The city of Jalalabad, a major commercial and industrial center, is 129 kilometers away, and the city of Kara-Kul is located nearby. Near the city there are Tash-Kumyr Hydro Power Plant and Kurpsay HPP on the Naryn River, which are part of the Naryn-Syrdarya cascade of HPPs.

Tash-Kumyr is called the city of miners. Part of the population works at the hydroelectric power station, and the city also has several secondary schools, a lyceum, and a city department of culture.

According to oral folk belief, Tash-Kumyr is surrounded by holy places with springs, where people come with asking for healing, for the birth of children, family well-being and happiness. But they can only be shown by knowledgeable locals who can guide them to these water sources.

Each place, and according to legend there are more than four of them, is associated with the legend of the formation and properties of spring water. One place has a tree with ribbons of cloth tied to good luck, and family prosperity, another has spring that has pebbles resembling organs of the human body that might be found on the bottom of this spring, the third tells the story of a father saying goodbye to his son, etc. People often come to these places, read prayers, perform rituals and drink water from sacred springs.
